That’s where  I left because it was boring. From IMDB: “An actress’s perception of reality becomes increasingly distorted as she finds herself falling for her co-star in a remake of an unfinished Polish production that was supposedly cursed.” AKA COMPLETE MIND FUCK. Didn’t have any idea what was going on in the beginning.

Now Lynch has written and made a lot of cool films, and even this is ranked a 7.1 on IMDB, but this film was too boring for even me. That does say something. Unless you have a bit of time to kill and are absolutely bored, I’d skip this movie.

David Lynch’s Inland Empire (Limited Edition Two-Disc Set)

Absurda / Rhino 2007, DVD, $17.38

As his memory comes back he finds himself traveling in time between two points in time where he attempts to try and change what cannot be changed.

Overall, it was a good movie as long as you like mindfuck movies (if you didn’t why are you here?). If you liked the idea of The Butterfly Effect I think you’d like this, at least I enjoyed it. Easy enough to watch and not require a lot of brain cells, but maybe just a bit too much for the general audience.

The I Inside

Andreas Grosch (Producer). Dimension 2005, DVD, $5.17

The plot is about a wealthy man who falls in love with this best friend’s love interest, and while at his birthday party, they head back to her house.  This is where all the shenanigans begins. Sort of. The next morning as he is leaving the girl’s house, a woman (from the party) followed him there and offers him a ride home, which he accepts. She goes crazy and crashes the car and from here on out it’s wtf is going on.

It’s a great movie. I saw the Vanilla Sky version before I saw this one, so I knew what was coming, which was too bad because this original is awesome. Oh, and it doesn’t have Tom Cruise in it, but Penélope Cruz is in it! FTW! Kinda cool they brought her back in Vanilla Sky playing the same part.

I’d recommend this movie over Vanilla Sky anyday. It is in Spanish, so subtitles all the way. I’ve seen it around named Permanent Midnight as well, and its original Spanish name, Abre los ojos.

Open Your Eyes

Alejandro Amenábar (Writer). Artisan Entertainment 1997, DVD, $4.56

Directed by David Cronenberg, it is nutty. Most certainly a WTF movie. The overall premise is that there is a group of people that get off on getting in car crashes and to some degree blood and death.

There’s quite a bit of mature content in this film, I would keep your kids away from it, probably. I wasn’t sure what was going on during the film, but it eventually made sense. The ending was awesome.

The movie starts out with a married (I think) couple that have an open relationship. They eventually find this underground group of people that remind me of the book Rant (where they go around smashing cars, sort of). In the movie like to go around and smash cars and get cut up, it’s their sexual release.  I won’t go any further into it because it is enjoyable and don’t want to give any more spoilers out. I do recommend it.

Crash

New Line Home Video 1997, DVD, $18.01

The movie is set in the future, seemingly post-apocalyptic world where food is scarce. One small French town survives by eating people under the guise of a butcher’s shop.

It all seems good until the butcher’s daughter falls for one of the new tenants they are about to feast on.

Overall the movie is excellent. Great directing, acting, and plot. Give it a shot if you have seen and liked the other movies I listed from this director.

Delicatessen (Special Edition)

Darius Khondji (Cinematographer). Lions Gate 1987, DVD, $6.99

Following is about a guy who follows other people and writes about it. At least until one day when he follows the same guy twice and gets caught. The guy that he was following is a thief and brings him into his world of stealing from people’s houses.

The movie showcases Nolan’s brilliance. Such a great movie. Acting, direction, plot, is all damn near perfect. You can certinely see why Nolan has become such a great director in his later films.

Memories of Murder is based off a true life event. A serial killer in South Korea went around killing women. He has not been caught to this day, because they still don’t know who it was. This was back in the 1980s and South Korea has a 15 year statute of limitations, and well, it’s been longer than that so nothing would happen to him if he came forth.

Anywho, the movie is awesome. If you’re familiar with Korean cinema, you’ll appreciate and recognize the awesome humor bits. The ending is crazy and I can’t believe they never caught the guy. Great film and definitely worth the time to watch.

I also wanted to mention this is rated an 8.1 on IMDB (if that matters for you) and currently has 14 award wins and 2 nominations. Wowzers.

Memories of Murder

Joon-ho Bong (Writer). Palm Pictures / Umvd 2005, DVD, $16.05

Visually, the movie is stunning.

The movie follows a cop on a new assignment, a missing persons assignment. It takes place in France in the year 2054. They have a company called Avalon that is all about beauty and health and living long, think Equilibrium -esque. The missing person is a scientist from the Avalon corporation.

A decent mystery/thriller story, but a little bit predictable. Overall it was a good movie, I can recommend it. It’s in French, so you’ll need subtitles if you don’t speak French.

Renaissance

Alexis Vonarb (Producer). Miramax 2006, DVD, $4.64

It’s about a little girl who’s parents die and she gets pretty taken into her own little imaginative world. It’s a Terry Gilliam film, so you know it’s gonna be pretty wonky and out there. His directing is awesome though with great shots, as most of his work is.

Jodelle Ferland, who plays the little girl, does an amazing job. For an 11 year old (at time of filming), it’s crazy how good she is. Jeff Bridges role is funny, I think that was a good casting decision there.

I think what most gets people irked from this movie is the little girl helping her dad injecting himself with drugs. Not a scene most people see or are ready for.

Great movie, another on the must-see list.

Tideland (Two-Disc Collector’s Edition)

Velocity / Thinkfilm 2007, DVD, $4.88

The movie is about a psychiatrist who (I don’t want to say gets a taste of her own medicine but whatever) has a tumor and begins to experience the effects of it as it gets larger in her brain. Eventually she ends up killing some people, and then the movie is over. I’m going to have to watch it again and maybe think it through.

It seemed like a good movie if you’re in the mood for a psychological thriller. It did seem short, or maybe I just enjoyed it (running time is 1hr 20mins, so not really short).
